FLDS Defense Announced for Food Stamp Fraud Case

FLDS Defense Announced for Food Stamp Fraud Case

“This would be funny if it weren’t so sad!” Those were the words of author and private investigator Sam Brower this week following the latest from the upcoming FLDS food stamp trial.

Eleven leaders of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints are to be trial for taking the government benefits of lower members of the church and using it to support a lavish lifestyle, and even, according to reports, to purchase expensive vehicles. On Tuesday defense attorneys suggested in a court filing that it was their religious right to accept food stamps from FLDS mothers.

On Facebook, Brower wrote; “I thought I had seen it all but this is the epitome of outrageous. The FLDS are making the assertion that it is their religious right to use food stamp benefits, which are meant to feed children in need, to give to their criminal leadership to not just distribute in any manner they please; but to buy $85,000.00 vehicles, build compounds and hideouts for criminals on the run, put money on America’s most infamous serial pedophile’s prison commissary account, and insure that the FLDS leadership live an opulent lifestyle while the drones and their children go hungry, barefoot, and live in squalor?”

While most of the defendants in the case are free, Lyle Jeffs, is being held until the trial. Jeffs is the brother of FLDS leader, Warren Jeffs, who is serving life in prison. Another Jeffs brother, Seth, is also a defendant.

Sam Brower helped to bring down FLDS leader Warren Jeffs through his investigative work and his book, “Prophets Prey.”  Warren Jeffs is serving a life sentence for having sex with a minor; his 12-year old wife.

Brower apparently believes this defense scheme is odd, but assumes it’s the best the defendants’ lawyers could come up with considering the circumstances.

No trial date has been announced.
