Flagstaff Woman Identified in Fatal Fall at Grand Canyon

A Flagstaff woman who had a fatal fall at the Grand Canyon last Monday has been identified as Jody McDaniel, 45.

At approximately 1:10 p.m. Monday, April 28, the Grand Canyon Regional Communications Center received a call reporting that a female had fallen off the rim at Mather Point located on the South Rim of Grand Canyon. The point was shut down for recovery operations.

National Park Service Helitak crew located the body, approximately 400 feet below the rim. National Park Service Search and Rescue crews recovered the body and made the positive identification.

An investigation in the incident is being conducted by the National Park Service and the Coconino County Medical Examiner. No further information is available at this time.

Of the millions of  people who visit the Grand Canyon each year, it is estimated that an average of 12 people die there annually. An average two to three deaths per year are from falls over the rim.
