March 18
00:49 2014

Lack of rain, dry conditions and lots of wind create a high risk for wild land fires in Northern Arizona this season, so be prepared. Wherever anything can burn is in danger, including grasslands and forests, camp sites and homes. If you’re in a high risk area, the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips to keep safe.

Red CrossDevelop a Family Evacuation Plan

Your evacuation plan should answer these questions:
• How will you leave your home and your neighborhood?
• What location will you go to if you evacuate?
• What items will you have in your pre-packed evacuation bag?
• If separated from family members how will you re-unite?

Put together an Evacuation Kit, including the “5 Ps
• Pills – Prescription medication and copies of prescriptions
• Papers – Important documents including Driver’s License, Social Security Card, Insurance Policies, Birth/Marriage Certificates, Investment Information, Wills, Deeds, Tax Information
• Pets – Have a plan in place to evacuate, transport and care for pets away from the home
• Pictures – Special photos and sentimental items that can’t be replaced
• Personal Computers

Other things to have on hand to take in a pre-packed bag:
• Radio
• Flashlight
• Batteries
• First Aid Kit
• Eyeglasses
• Water
• Non-perishable food
• Diapers
• Hand sanitizer
• Medical equipment and devices
• Change of clothes
• Sleeping bags

In Case of Evacuation

Law enforcement agencies are responsible for carrying out evacuations and for the security of those areas. Local chapters of the American Red Cross set up evacuation shelters. Evacuated individuals who choose not to go to a shelter are advised to contact the Red Cross to keep family and friends informed.

Register your phones and email address on the Code Red emergency notification system to be notified of emergency situations. To register, go to Coconino County’s Emergency Management website and click on the Code Red Banner at the bottom of the page. There is also a free Code Red emergency notification app for android and iPhone that you can download.
