FEMA Officials Meet With Navajo Nation

FEMA Officials Meet With Navajo Nation

After Navajo Nation President Russell Begaye formally requested help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency in dealing with the fallout of last month’s Gold King Mines spill, the FEMA team from Region IX met and discussed a possible response.

FEMA spokesman John Hamill said that yesterday’s meeting focused on the best way to move forward from the disaster.

Details still need to be worked out because the request from Begaye is unprecedented in regards to FEMA’s typical response procedure.

The Stafford Act, which is where FEMA gets its authority for resource allocation, stipulates that FEMA resources can be deployed after the president declares a national disaster.

According to Hamill, since President Obama never declared the spill a national disaster, “FEMA usually wouldn’t be involved in a situation like this.”

Hamill went on to say, “We haven’t said yes and we haven’t said no.”
