FEMA Denies Navajo Nation’s Request

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has denied the Navajo Nation’s request for an emergency declaration due to a mine spill.

President Russell Begaye requested the emergency declaration from FEMA earlier this month.

Tribal officials have stated that they are unsatisfied with the response of the U.S Environmental Protection Agency to the Gold King Mine spill, which unleashed a torrent of toxic waste water into the Animas and San Juan rivers in August.

The San Juan river runs through the northern part of the Navajo Nation.

FEMA said this week that most of the response and recovery efforts for the spill fall under the authority of other federal agencies and denied Begaye’s request.

Begaye says he will appeal FEMA’s decision.
