Navajo Generating StationThe Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued its 2012 Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) Data for Arizona and the the Pacific Southwest, including California, Nevada, Hawaii and the Pacific Territories. The TRI Program collects data on toxic chemical releases to the air, water, and land, along with information on waste management and pollution prevention activities across the country.

Our yearly analysis of chemicals being used by industry helps residents understand which chemicals are used in their neighborhoods. This year we have enhanced our fact sheet system to aid in getting TRI information about specific locations.”
–Jared Blumenfeld, EPA Regional Administrator for the Pacific Southwest

It looks like America is cleaning up its act. Nationally, toxic chemical releases are down 12% from 2011 to 2012.

Arizona TRI Results

So what about Arizona? Highlights from 2012 in Arizona show that since 2011:

  • Air releases decreased 22 percent
  • On-site land releases decreased 13 percent
  • Underground Injection releases did not change
  • Water releases did not change
  • Off-site Transfers increased 68 percent

Overall, the state ranked 10th out of 56 states and territories included in the report. In 2012, 257 TRI facilities in Arizona reported a total of 86 million pounds of toxic chemical releases. The Navajo Generating Station here in the Page Lake Powell area is responsible for less than 2% of Arizona’s total TRI releases. Get the Facts For Your Area

A new, updated fact sheet system allows users to see what’s going on in their specific area. Or anywhere else.

To use the TRI fact sheet system, click on this link, scroll down and enter your zip code, city or county. The new tool will create a fact sheet about the toxic releases near you.

TRI data reports are submitted annually to EPA, states, and tribes by manufacturing, metal mining, electric utilities, and commercial hazardous waste facilities. Many of the releases subject to TRI reporting are regulated under other EPA program requirements designed to limit harm to human health and the environment.
