Desiree Fowler is President of the Page School Board

Tuesday night’s special meeting of the Page Unified School District Board was over quickly. It began at 5:02 PM and ended at 5:09.

The results were to approve the resignation of Superintendent Larry Wallen, and to place Mr. Wallen on administrative leave, with pay, while a resolution of his terms of resignation are ironed out.

A new President of the school board was  voted on and approved by the board. Taking over from the longtime President, Bob Candelaria, is board member Desiree Fowler.

That decision was unanimous.

Mr. Candelaria had resigned on Monday, October 25th.

Also decided Tuesday was the approval of having a special meeting this coming Monday, November 1st, in order to select a new Superintendent for the Page schools.

The meeting Tuesday was packed, and quiet, with no comments allowed from those in attendance. Outside there were numerous Page Police vehicles and at least six police officers, ready…just in case they were needed.

Why the police? Because earlier in the day Tuesday there had been a student walk-out, with dozens of students demonstrating outside the Administration building on campus. There was also a worry that things could get nasty at the Tuesday night meeting since there was so much acrimony in town over a recent comment made by then-Superintendent Larry Wallen.

During a school board meeting he had referred to Navajo children as “brown” kids.

That comment rekindled bad feelings about the Wallen administration from months ago that reportedly had to do with the district losing a lot of teachers after the 2020-2021 school year.

For the record, Mr. Wallen has been married for years to a Navajo lady, and they have a Navajo son and Navajo grandchildren.
