Remembering Dan Brown: Leader and Visionary

December 05

It’s one year to the day that former Page Mayor, community activist and business leader, Dan Brown passed away. He may be gone, but his impact lives on.

For over two decades, Dan Brown was a major influence on the City of Page. He brought the local radio stations back to life, ran a successful business, served on City Council and was elected Mayor of the City of Page.

It all started in 1990, when Dan and Janet Brown rescued Page radio stations KXAZ-FM and KPGE-AM from bankruptcy. The Browns owned and operated a successful radio station in Gunnison, Colorado for over a decade, so they knew what they were doing. Almost immediately, the Page stations became financially successful under the Brown’s operation; and they expanded their endeavors to a Visitors Guide publication, tourist kiosks, and daily news. At first, the move from Gunnison to Page required a lot of commuting and time apart for the Browns. While Dan spearheaded the Page radio operations, Janet stayed in Colorado, tying up the Gunnison station and raising their two daughters. Eventually, they were all in Page together.

It has been a great move for us because of the community and how much we appreciate the climate and surroundings,” says Janet.

Dan became politically active in the new millennia, serving on Page City Council from 2002 to 2005. He believed a city councilor’s first responsibility is to the City of Page. He reached beyond Page boundaries to find State and County money for the City.

To make a point in 2004, Brown placed memorial crosses on the lawn of the County Supervisor’s Office in Flagstaff. He wanted Coconino County Commissioners to realize their responsibility for the Emergency Medical Service needs of County residents, especially on the nearby Navajo and Hopi Nations. The City of Page was being saddled with the responsibility of responding to and paying for emergency rescue services on federally designated Indian reservations in Coconino County. This left the City of Page short of resources. When the County wouldn’t listen, Brown made a motion to no longer subsidize Emergency Medical Services.

If our paramedics are out on the reservation, we can’t provide services to Page,” Dan complained. “The County needs to pay its fair share of rescue services. The County is like a deadbeat dad not taking responsibility for his children. If we don’t hold the County accountable, there’s no incentive for them to take care of their children.”

Dan Brown was elected mayor of Page in 2005. During his term, he brought the police and fire department wages up to market level to retain essential employees for the City of Page.

Dan was a leader and innovator and even went down to the Legislature about Page and Page’s problems,” Janet remarks. “He was bold enough to do that. His campaign was to make them realize the urgency of getting emergency services for County citizens who were overloading the Page City Emergency staff. He worked really hard for the City and put everything else on the back burner. His mayoral responsibilities were really big.”

Dan passed away a year ago at the age of 63 after battling colon cancer. He strongly advocated that men get a colonoscopy at 50 as doctors recommended. “Men think they are indestructible and put off that kind of stuff,” Dan had remarked.

In Dan Brown’s campaign for mayor, he ran as “The Clear Choice,” focused on infrastructure improvements, moving Page forward and positive leadership. While his term is over, as mayor and in life, his legacy lives on.
