No Dam Jam here this year

The controversial Dam Jam Musical Event planned for Memorial Day Weekend in Page is postponed for this year. According to Joe Mckee, event organizer, the event is not being scrapped. Postponement will allow for improving financial stability, sourcing bigger named bands and meeting City of Page requirements.

In an e-mail to the Mayor, city councilors, city manager and local media, McKee writes:

To all whom this concerns,

I would like to start off by saying I am extremely grateful to all of you who have shown your support for bringing a large scale music festival to the city of Page, as well as those of you who have given your words of advice and given criticism to things that should be addressed. I would also like to say that I would greatly appreciate it if this message could be forwarded onto any other heads of the various departments that have or had an interest in this matter, as I could not find everyones email address that I was looking for.

With that being said the purpose of this email is to let everyone know that things have developed that will prevent me from being able to successfully pull this event together in a manner that is both successful for my business and satisfactory to the leaders of Page. I have worked very hard to please all the varying opinions on this matter and after much thought realize that moving forward with trying to please all parties would simply not be beneficial to me mentally, physically or monetarily. Without going into excessive detail, the main reason I can not physically do this is that my other business has suffered the loss of two key employees and the workload has tripled in the past month. Leaving me with not enough hours in a day or days in the week to get everything accomplished for one business, let alone taking on all the new tasks being asked of me to complete by city officials and concentrate on putting together a good show.

I am not scrapping the whole idea of the “Dam Jam” but putting the concept to the side for the moment so I can focus my attention on my other business for the next few months. My plan in putting this off for this year is to have adequate time to gain more financial stability, source bigger named bands, and meet the various requests made by the City of Page.

On that note, I would like to say that while the tasks handed to me by the city to complete to their satisfaction are logical in concept, they are unreasonable in reality. I say this because I have been asked to create what would be the standard for any outdoor music festival to ever happen in Page. This is being asked of me with the expectation that I would submit my site plans and such and hope for the approval of all interested parties. I find this unreasonable because it should not be a citizens job to write city policy without compensation and with the expectation of this citizen to come out of pocket for all the costs related to the development of city property.

I feel if the city wants to standardize how any outdoor event happens at the Page Shores Amphitheater, which is a good idea, they should do so with the staff they have. Unless a citizen were to volunteer those services of course. Requiring this to be done, in what seems to be only in my case, is prejudicial at best. I would hope all of you can understand where I am coming from on this and would encourage you to apply these standards I seem to be held to, to any other event promoter that may want to bring something fun and exciting to Page. If not, I would greatly question your motives.

I sincerely thank you for your time,
Joe Mckee
