Dam Jam Discussed at Page Tourism Board

February 03
23:58 2014

tourism_smallAt last week’s Page Tourism meeting, Bunny Cochran, Prevention Specialist with Encompass Health Services, presented information to the board regarding data on juvenile substance abuse and asked the board and the City of Page to insure the proper precautions will be be taken at the proposed Dam Jam concert to protect local youth from illicit drug use and underage access to alcohol at the event.

The event’s organizer Joe McKee also presented at the the meeting about the projected benefits to the city in the forms of tax revenues, and patronage of local businesses. He also spoke about the security measures being taken including the hiring of 20 to 25 individuals from a Tuscon-based firm with large festival-type security experience. McKee said more security options are also being discussed. Captain Ray Varner of the Page Police Department and others from the force will also be on-site. The concert is also an 18 and over event.

On behalf of Page City Council, Dr. Mike Bryan said he doesn’t want to see some of the troubles that accompanied PowellPalooza, a concert previously at the Page Shores Ampitheater. Traffic control is another issue being discussed. Dr. Bryan said he may place the item on City Council agenda to address any issues citizens may have.

Tourism Board Chair, Ryan Zimmer, also spoke in defense of the Jam saying the concert has “absolutely nothing to do with drug use.” In the end, the board agreed that McKee made a compelling argument in favor of the event being of benefit to the city’s coffers and agreed to help with some publicity funding in the amount of $5,000.
