“The voting booth is the one place where we are all truly equal,” said Patty Hansen, Coconino County Recorder. “Everybody gets one vote. If you want your voice heard on how you’re governed and who’s making the decisions that govern you, you need to vote. Otherwise your voice isn’t heard.”

Important Voting Dates

  • Voter Registration deadline: October 6, 2014
  • Early voting begins and early ballots are mailed: October 9, 2014
  • Last day to request an early ballot to be mailed: October 24, 2014
  • Last day to vote early in person: October 31, 2014

Historically, Hansen says there have been elections so close in the state of Arizona that they’ve been decided by the flip of a coin, or in at least one case, by a hand of poker.

But in this day and age close elections happen; close elections. Hansen was involved in one statewide election when she worked in Nebraska that was decided by less than one-half vote per county.

It was a Democratic election for governor and it was decided by just forty-three votes, in an election that involved ninety-three counties,” she said.

The Coconino County Recorder shares an interesting perspective on her job, though.

As an elections administrator we don’t care who wins, we just like them to win big, so we don’t have to do a re-count,” she said with a chuckle.

And Mary Hansen’s bottom line is, “If you don’t vote, you can’t complain.”

Remember, you have to update your registration when you change your residence, mail address, your name or your political party preference.
