Glittering Mountain isn’t a sparkling success yet, but it cleared an important hurdle in December.

The Coconino County Board of Supervisors gave the $14 million development its blessing.

The project – known as The Outlook at Glittering Mountain – will be located on 70 mixed-use acres next to Twin Arrows Casino Resort, just outside of Flagstaff.

Navajo Nation Shopping Centers, Inc (NNSC). is behind the ambitious project.

The first phase of the development will be a 50,000-square-feet multifaceted entertainment center – which will feature an eatery – according to NNSC CEO Nathaniel Begay.

“Then we want to do some professional administration offices,” Begay said.

The massive project will also include more retail and shopping centers, he added.

Phase Two has plans to include an artisan village and retailers such as Wal-Mart, Target, Sam’s Club and Costco.

Other amenities planned for Glittering Mountain include big box retailers, condominiums and townhouses.

A family entertainment center will offer a bowling alley, video arcade, theater, mini golf and laser tag arena. The project includes an RV park, outlet mall, upscale hotel and gas station.

“We have a museum planned for the third phase,” Begay said.

Phase Four includes housing.

Because the land is not held in trust for the tribe, the county had to give its approval for the development to move forward.

“This is the first time Coconino County has entered into such an agreement with the Navajo Nation,” District 5 Commissioner Lena Fowler said.

Before signing off on the project the county made several modifications, including an 1150-foot wildfire buffer at the northwest corner of the project in the area of Padre Canyon.
