A coalition of western states scholars is urging the federal government to make an in-depth study of the future of the Colorado River.

Specifically, the academics want to know if climate change is contributing to reduced flow in the river and whether there is going to be enough water to supply the river’s 36 million users in seven states and parts of Mexico.

In a letter to Interior Secretary Sally Jewell, the coalition says the government is relying on a projection that there will be only a nine percent reduction in water flow in the Colorado by 2060 and ignoring other estimates that find it will decline by 45 percent by 2050 because of climate change.

A recent Bureau of Reclamation study concluded there will be “significant shortfalls” in the amount of available water in the next 50 years.

Owen Lammers with Colorado Riverkeeper commented, “We are hoping for the best when we should be preparing for the worst.”
