Warren Jeffs

Many members of the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have been exiting their longtime home of Colorado City, Arizona and Hildale, Utah. That exodus may expand some more after a ruling made on Wednesday.

According to reports, a federal judge made a ruling that will force at least the Colorado City side of the FLDS dual community known as Short Creek, to make drastic changes in the way property is divided.

Most of the land in Colorado City is owned by the United Effort Plan (UEP), which was controlled by the FLDS. But the State of Utah took over control of the UEP twelve years because, according to reports, FLDS leader Warren Jeffs was not managing it well. However, the EUP has continued to own the property all of the town’s homes rest on.

Jeffs is now in a Texas prison for life for having sexual relations with very young girls; his “wives.”

But that is going to change following Wednesday’s federal court ruling. The ruling states that the land must be subdivided, which likely means each home will have its own parcel of land or property.

Soon, the parcels will be recorded with Mohave County (Az.) officials. Once that is complete, then UEP will either sell or give away those individual plots of land. That may apparently lead to more non-FLDS members moving into the community.

There’s no word if parcels of property will also be decided on the Utah side of Short Creek.
