CCC Page Campus Converted to Instructional Site

April 03
23:30 2014

As part of Coconino Community College’s (CCC) Financial Austerity Plan, the Page campus is being converted to an instructional site. In its new form, the campus will mainly offer televised and online courses, with some classes taught by part-time faculty. No full-time instructors will be on site. The campus will be reduced to two full-time employees: the Director & Student Services Coordinator and Enrollment Specialist.

Online degreeAfter growing too fast for its finances, and challenged by state budget cuts and flat property tax, CCC’s District Governing Board approved a Financial Austerity Plan in March.

One of the options considered in the Financial Austerity Plan was to shut down the Page campus completely. But after input from Page residents, Board members decided to convert the CCC Page campus to an instructional site instead.

We listened to the concerns of Page residents in reference to closing the campus and decided that we can still serve the area with the new model. It is unfortunate that we had to scale back our workforce to balance the budget during these difficult times. We are fully aware of the impact that it has had on those employees that have had positions eliminated.”–District Governing Board Member Lloyd Hammonds

According to a CCC press release, enrollment has dropped at the Page campus as students look for more flexible options to earn a degree. Community surveys show that Page area residents want more evening classes and online opportunities to accommodate work and family responsibilities. The instructional site will focus on students needs with the goal of increasing associate degrees earned in the area.

We are still working on the details, but we believe that we can offer Page residents and others in the outlying areas of northern Coconino County the opportunity to earn a basic Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) associate degree without ever having to leave the area”–Page campus Director Jim Hunter.

The Arizona General Education Curriculum (AGEC) Associate Degree

The AGEC is the foundation of a community college education. When students transfer to one of the Arizona state universities, AGEC coursework applies toward a bachelor’s degree. It consists of 35-37 credits which include:

  • freshman composition
  • mathematics
  • arts & humanities
  • social & behavioral sciences
  • physical and biological sciences
  • options (these will vary by community college and AGEC completed)
