Brothers Victims in Plane Crash Near Virgin River Gorge

July 22
11:05 2014

Brothers, ages 19 and 16 from Clinton, Utah, were identified as the victims in a plane crash near the Virgin River Gorge on Sunday. Daulton Whatcott, 19, had recently earned his pilot’s license and was piloting the Cessna 172 from Beaver, Utah to Mesquite, Nevada. His brother, Jaxon Whatcott, 16, a high school athlete, was to attend a basketball tournament in Las Vegas.

Both brothers were athletes at Syracuse High School; Daulton graduated in 2013, and Jaxon was to begin his junior year in the fall.

The two were the only occupants of the plane when it crashed Sunday evening about 25 miles south of St. George, Utah, just south of the Virgin River Gorge, about 150 feet south of Interstate 15. The brothers’ bodies were recovered Monday morning by the Mohave County Sheriff’s Office. The cause of the crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
