Brewer Declares Emergency: Record Rainfall

September 08
12:41 2014

Black Car FloodedArizona Gov. Jan Brewer declared a statewide emergency Monday, September 8, 2014 because of record-setting rainfall.

Flooding from major storms dropped heavy rain on much of Arizona and killed one woman in Phoenix who became trapped in her flooded car. All non-essential state employees were told to stay home as Phoenix received 3 inches of rain by 7:00 A.M. snarling the morning commute and flooding many streets and freeways. Many motorists were stranded and many schools and businesses also shut down for the day.

While officials are saying the worst of the storm drenching Phoenix with record-setting rain may be over, it’s not over yet with more rain in the forecast.

Parts of the Valley will see continued precipitation through tonight and even into Tuesday as moisture-laden air blankets the Phoenix area, according to National Weather Service meteorologists.

Despite rainfall of more than three inches recorded at Sky Harbor, heat and humidity were expected to result in another half inch or more in parts of the Valley. The downpour is courtesy of Tropical Storm Norbert, which pushed into Baja California overnight.
