President Russell Begaye delivered his State of the Union address to tribal council yesterday in Window Rock.

Begaye talked about the August 5th spill that released more than 3 million gallons of toxic metals into the Animas and San Juan rivers. He added tribal officials are continuing to communicate with the federal government about the spill which includes testifying at federal hearings about the spill’s impact on the tribal community.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has reimbursed the Bureau of Indian Affairs for its response to the spill.

Begaye also said that his administration is focused on passing the Navajo Nation Veterans Act which addresses housing for veterans along with offering health care services by establishing a regional service center on the Navajo Nation through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs.

This week the council will also consider bills to confirm Donald Benn as executive director of the Navajo Nation Environmental Protection Agency, Bidtah Becker as executive director of the Division of Natural Resources and Terrelene G. Massey as executive director of the Division of Social Services.
