Begay Calls for Independent Investigation Into Winslow Shooting

Navajo President Russell Begay is asking for an independent investigation following the police shooting death of a Navajo woman in Winslow. 27-year old Loreal Tsingine was shot and killed while armed with a pair of scissors.

Currently, the Arizona Department of Public Safety is examining the evidence from Sunday’s shooting, outside a Circle-K. It was a Winslow police officer who shot Tsingine five times. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Reports indicate the officer was attempting to take the woman into custody when the shooting occurred. He apparently felt the scissors presented a threat to his life or others.

In a press release from his office in Window Rock, President Begay referred to other controversial police shootings from around the country.

“If there is no legitimate justification for taking Tsingine’s life, then the Navajo Nation wants the fullest extent of the law to be taken in serving justice,” said Begay.

There’s been no word from the Winslow Police Department. Their chief, Stephen Garnett, is currently taking part in a training course in Washington, DC. It’s not known if he has left the seminar, in order to return to Winslow and assist in the aftermath of the shooting.

The name of the officer has not been released.
