On Friday, January 24, a BASE jumper was killed jumping off a cliff near the the Grand Canyon. David Stather, a 41-year-old surgeon from Calgary, Canyon, died from injuries sustained in a fall near the confluence of Little Colorado River and the Colorado River. He was wearing a popular wing suit and parachute used by many jumpers in the sport.

Coconino County Sheriff’s Deputies received a report Friday evening of the possible fatality. Stather’s friends reported him missing after attempting a second jump from the canyon edge. They were able to see his red wing suit approximately 2000 feet from the top of the rim as they were hiking out.

Due to darkness and lack of visibility, helicopters were unable to reach Stather Friday evening. On Saturday, January 25 an Arizona Department of Public Safety helicopter assisted search and rescue and county deputies in locating Stather. He was confirmed deceased and air lifted from the canyon.

Stather was a well-known and respected respiratory therapist and surgeon at the Alberta Health Center in Canada. He is survived by his parents who reside in Guelph in the Ontario Province of Canada.

The incident is currently under investigation by the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office and Coconino County Medical Examiner’s Office.

BASE jumping is an extreme sport where jumpers plunge from fixed objects, using a parachute to break their fall. “BASE” stands for the type fixed objects that can be jumped off of: Buildings, Antennas, Spans and Earth.

A 37-year-old Norwegian wingsuit BASE jumper was killed at the Little Colorado River Gorge in 2012 when a gust of wind blew him into a cliff.
