Lawyers hired to help the state of Utah obtain ownership of federal lands within its borders are being accused of stiffing state taxpayers.

A Washington, D.C., watchdog group claims taxpayers “have likely footed the bill for luxurious accommodations, first class airline tickets, and expensive meals well beyond what is reasonable and necessary.”

One attorney with a New Orleans firm billed the state $3,100 for a two-night hotel stay.

Of $2 million appropriated to date by the Utah Legislature for the legal fight, $900,000 has already been paid out. The state is expecting an eventual expenditure of $14 million on the case.

A Logan, Utah, think tank retained to develop advocacy materials is also accused of over-billing the state.

The D.C. group called for an immediate audit and it appears state Representative Keven Stratton heeded the call. The Republican from Orem announced that an internal review into the use of allocated funds is underway.
