PHOENIX, ARIZONA – The Arizona Health Care Association (AHCA), representing more than 170 nursing homes and assisted living communities across the state released a workforce survey. Those survey results revealed an urgent need to address the labor shortage facing the long term care profession.

Key findings from AHCA members include:

  • 84 percent of nursing homes and assisted living providers said their workforce situation has been getting worse over the last year. 21 percent of those surveyed say they are in crisis mode.
  • 85 percent of nursing homes and assisted living communities are facing a staffing shortage. Due to these shortages, nearly every nursing home and assisted living community (94 percent) is asking staff to work overtime or extra shifts.
  • 94 percent of nursing homes and assisted living communities are working to hire new staff. 82 percent are increasing pay to staff.
  • 62 percent of nursing homes and assisted living communities are operating at or near a loss financially.

“The survey demonstrates the severe workforce challenges long term care providers are facing due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All long term care facilities are struggling to hire and retain staff that are needed to serve thousands of vulnerable residents in Arizona,” said David Voepel, CEO of AHCA. “Lawmakers and regulators across the state must prioritize long term care and that begins with providing resources to address workforce challenges. Recruitment and retention efforts will only be effective with competitive wages and training programs.”

“On the national front, we support the key proposals in our Care for Our Seniors Act, which will allow us to boost our workforce, but without the help from Congress and state legislators, this will not be possible.”
