Aramark Employee Dies at Lake Powell

June 16
08:05 2014

bullfrogmarina_smallThe National Park Service reports the death of an Aramark employee earlier this week at Lake Powell’s Bullfrog Marina.

At approximately 8:00 a.m. on Thursday June 12, 2014,  the body of Alec McQueen, of Salt Lake City, was recovered near the boat docks in  Bullfrog Marina.  McQueen, 22, was  boating with two other Aramark employees when the accident happened.

According to a press release,  the 3 employees were returning to the dock area at about 7:00 P.M.  on Tuesday June 10, 2014.  As the boat was pulling into an open slip to park, the driver turned off the boat and McQueen, who was sitting on the back of the boat, jumped in the water. The driver reports seeing  McQueen in the water a few feet behind the boat but he then disappeared and did not resurface.

National Park Service arrived on the scene and notified the NPS Dive team and Kane County Sheriff’s Office.  Because it was so late in the day, it was decided that a search would be initiated the next morning.

After an unsuccessful search on Wednesday,  including the malfunctioning of some search equipment,  a request was made to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office for the use of their dive team, robot, and sonar.  They arrived in Bullfrog early Thursday and the search resumed at a deeper depth. Divers were able to make the recovery in the primary search area at a depth of about 113 feet.

Responding agencies included the National Park Service, Utah State Parks, Kane County Sheriff’s Office, and Summit County Search and Rescue.  The case remains under joint investigation.
