Russell BegayeBy John Christian Hopkins

Stop the presses!

Rumors of Navajo President Russell Begaye’s support for the controversial Grand Canyon Escalade project have been greatly exaggerated.

A statement from the president’s office Wednesday makes it clear that Begaye opposes the 420-acre development – and always has.

That response came a day after he signed an agreement with outgoing President Ben Shelly to continue some of Shelly’s economic initiatives – one of which was the Grand Canyon Escalade.

But the signing of the agreement – moments before he took the oath of office – was only symbolic, Begaye said.

“The agreement signed yesterday during the Inauguration between President Russell Begaye and outgoing Ben Shelly was historic and a symbolic gesture of Ahiɫ na’ anish, a smooth transition and an agreement in principle as a new administration takes office,” the statement said.

Begaye said he and Vice President Jonathan Nez will evaluate each of the Shelly-Rex Lee Jim projects before making any final decisions.

As for Escalade, Begaye said he has always opposed it – and made that clear during the campaign.

Begaye didn’t read what he was signing, said Eric Descheenie, the president’s spokesman.
