Abrupt End to Navajo Council Session

Abrupt End to Navajo Council Session
July 25

By John Christian Hopkins

The Navajo Tribal Council was on the last day of its summer session when the proceedings were swiftly cancelled.

Budget & Finance Committee Chairman Jamie Henio made a motion to adjourn the summer session at 2:17 p.m. The motion passed on a 17-5 vote.

Though Henio offered no explanation for his motion, the reason seems be related to a Covid-19 surge among legislative staffers.

The council was debating a bill to use $13.2 million from the Sihasin Fund to complete the Kayenta Judicial Complex when Speaker Seth Damon suddenly called for a brief recess at 1:45 p.m.

Damon urged all the delegates to read an E-mail he had just sent them. During this brief halt all delegates present and legislative staff were given rapid Covid tests.

Immediately after council resumed Henio made his motion.

The council adjourned with nine pieces of legislation still on the agenda. Damon told delegates that due to the emergency situation, council could call for a special session to complete their unfinished business.

A petition calling for a special session on July 26 was already being circulated.
