Lawsuit Against LDS Claims Abuse

Lawsuit Against LDS Claims Abuse

The Mormon Church is on the receiving end of a new lawsuit filed by two Navajo people; a brother and sister, who say they were treated poorly when they were part of a Mormon foster program years ago. The suit was filed this week in Window Rock.

The two plaintiffs claim that when they were children, along with another sibling, they were sexually abused on numerous occasions, while placed with various families. It was called “The Indian Placement program,” which was discontinued years ago.

The male plaintiff alleges in the suit that after he complained to LDS officials about the initial abuse, he was placed with another family, where the abuse continued. Again, he allegedly complained, and was again placed in an abusive situation.

The woman plaintiff says during her time with the program she was sexually abused by the 40-year friend of a step-brother. Then, when she was placed with another family, she was allegedly abused by her foster father.

The foster program for Native Americans was in operation in the late 1970s to the early 1980s. The lawsuit does not specify the damages being sought.
